FOOD SAFETY AWARD 2008-2009

The Food Safety Award is a scheme operated by Environmental Health & Trading Standards. It rewards those food businesses who operate at a consistently high standard of food hygiene.

Businesses are invited to enter the award following an inspection officer's nomination. Those who finally receive the award have demonstrated, on three unannounced award visits, legal structural compliance, correct temperature control of foodstuffs, safe practices, good management techniques and have minimised the risk of contamination to food. Staff must also be trained to the appropriate level for their job.

HEART BEAT AWARD 2008-2009

The Heartbeat Award is given to caterers who are committed to offering greater choice to customers through the provision of a healthy environment and healthier food choices.

It recognises their contribution towards public health and the local and national targets set for the reduction of coronary heart disease, diabetes, strokes and obesity.

The award was developed by Health Promotion England, and the Department of Health. It is endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and co-ordinated in Stockport by Stockport Council's Environmental Health & Trading Standards as part of the Council's involvement in the Stockport Health Promise.

Businesses and organisations which meet the criteria are entitled to display the certificate for one year and use the Heartbeat logo for promotions.

SCORES ON THE DOOR AWARD 2009

Scores on the Doors is a 5-star rating scheme providing user-friendly information about the standards of hygiene and compliance with the law in food premises in Stockport.

Under the Food Safety Act 1990 Local Authorities have a duty to inspect food businesses and public can request this information under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

From March 2009 customers will be able to find out the star rating of premises in Stockport though accessing the scores on the doors website. The premises that are hygienic and produce safe food will have more stars. This will benefit the business in that it should attract more customers.

FINALIST 2008

Stockport Curry Chef Competition

The competition comprises three rounds. The first round involves an inspection of the restaurant/takeaway premises. Successful premises go through to the second round where the chef would prepare in 45 minutes:

Judges watch the chefs prepare their dishes from start to finish assessing culinary skills and hygiene. The food is then judged for texture, aroma, appearance, originality and presentation.

The three highest scoring chefs then qualify for the final at a central venue.
